Can I use my approved government grant money for something other than I proposed?

I was recently approved for a government grant for my college education. After getting off the phone with the specialist about my grant, I realized that I wanted funding for a used car versus my education since I would need the car to get to school.

If I am actually officially approved for the government grant for my education, but use the money for a down payment for a car instead would I get in some trouble? Would the government track my grant money and realize that I didn't use it for my education like I proposed? I didn't lie about it, it's just that the thought didn't cross my mind until I already hung up and the company processed my application through some national database. I don't know if they have grants for buying a car. I'm an idiot, I know. Any help would be great! Thanks!!!

It depends on what kind of grant you received for your college education. If it is a Pell Grant, it does not matter how the extra money is spent. If the grant was from like Grants.gov for research purposes, the government does get kind of uneasy with the spending. The best thing to do is check with the government agency providing the grant before acting. Good luck!
