Women's College volleyball?

ok so im in highschool and i want to play volleyball in college... however i dont think im good enough for a scholarship, because i dont play on a club team bt i am a great player...
im varsity team captain and i really love volleyball more than anything
my question is can i play in college even if i dont get a volleyball scholarship? because i really want to play and i think i hav the potential i just need to kno if i can.
I live in pittsburgh so im trying rite now to get into Pitt. and this year coming up (fall 2010) i will b a senior... any suggestions?

In Division I, each school is allowed to give scholarships to a maximum of 12 players. In the women's game, if they give just $100 to a player, she's counted as receiving a scholarship and is counted under the "head count" rules. Contrast that with the men's game, which is allowed 4.5 scholarships under NCAA rules. It's an "equivalency" sport so they can slice and dice those 4.5 scholarships every which way and it still only counts as 4.5.

You would be surprised how few Division I players are getting full athletic scholarships. There are just a few leagues where the majority of participating schools actually fully fund all 12 scholarships they're allowed.

That's a long way of saying -- the willingness to play without receiving an athletic scholarship might help you. Be aware that NCAA rules forbid a coach from saying something like, "We can't give you a scholarship your freshman year, but money will free up your sophomore year and we might be able to give you some then."

You should make a list now of the universities you're considering and go to their websites. Find the form that lets you indicate you're interested in playing for that school (often called the Prospective Student-Athlete Questionnaire). Are you playing on a club team that has qualified for the Junior Nationals? If so, let them know where you'll be and where they can watch you play. College coaches seldom have time to go to high school matches during the fall because they're in season at that time. The club season is the time to be seen by colleges.

There are very few players who coaches look at without advance notice of that player's interest. Good luck and get yourself out there!
